Christmas 2022 |
December 12, 2022 Dear Friend, Apr 24-26: My Ferris High School friend David Yenney visited me. May 14: My niece Allyson visit me. I was a San Francisco tour guide. These were separate visits but saw many of the same sights: Pier 39, Sea Lions, Aquarium of the Bay, Musée Mécanique, National Maritime Museum, Sunset Cruise, California Academy of Sciences, Japanese Tea Garden, North Vista Point, and various spots to dine. Dave is retiring to the Philippines to be with his wife Marge, who is from the Philippines. I've attended Caltech Alumni Assoc, Keck Institute, MIT Club of Boston Zoom conferences including: Windows into the Secret Lives of Cells, From Teenage Rocketeer to Space Entrepreneur, What Flying an Airplane Upside Down Taught Me about Data Science, Sustainability of Forests with Fewer Trees, Can We Stop Aging, and Should We Do It? My Path to the Perkin Medal, and Early Science in the Early Universe with the JWST. I also attended three Stanford Engineering "Engineering Health Through 3D Printing" flash talks live on campus. I've gone to ACT and SFPH plays: Fefo and Friends, Lehman Trilogy, Passengers, Heroes of the Fourth, Water by the Spoonful, Paper Dreams of Harry Chin, Follies, and As You Like It. ACT play Passengers was a bit of musical gymnastics, circus acts, songs, and dialog. I've gone to SF Opera: Dream of the Red Chamber, Eugene Onegin, Dialogues of Carmalites, and La Traviata. I've gone to concerts and shows: Stevie Nicks at Shoreline Amphitheatre and Moulin Rouge, the Musical at Orpheum Theater. I tried to see Rod Steward and Cheap Trick, but these groups cancelled and changed their concert date to 2023. Sep 9: Weather App was showing 109F in Palo Alto at one point, but did adjust down to a high of 105F later that day. I skipped out on all the global warming by going to San Francisco that day, where it is always cooler. I saw Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021 being reshown) at the Metreon, ate lunch at a downtown Indian restaurant, and read New Scientist and Pour La Science magazines around Pier 39 area afterward. Oct 25: There was a 5.1 earthquake in my area, epicenter approximately 9 miles East-Southeast of Alum Rock in San Jose. I saw a Fleet Week air show including the Blue Angels two weeks earlier in San Francisco. Currently, I am reading papers and books by Gerald A. Edgar, Joris van der Hoeven, and John R. Shackell about Transseries, Real Differential Algebra, and Symbolic Asymptotics. Merry Christmas to all my friends and family! Kelly Roach |
